It is in the 30s that the hoodie would have been born. Champion Productscreated just after the end of the First World War, claims the paternity. Originally, a sweatshirt with a hood added, becoming a functional piece of clothing protecting from cold, wind and rain, intended for workers and athletes. But you probably have to go back to the Middle Ages to find its roots, through the hooded robes or tunics worn by monks, and the hooded capes worn by those who worked outdoors.

In the modern era, the hoodie protects workers in New York's cold storage warehouses, looking for something much thicker than their underwear. In the mid-1970s, hip hop adopted the hoodie through graffiti artists, concerned about not being recognized so they could practice their art in peace, and break dancers concerned about keeping their muscles warm before hitting the dance floor. In 1976, the release of Rocky in the cinema contributed to popularize the hoodie, which boxers such as Mohammed Ali were already wearing. The skateboarders, seen then as marginal, amateurs of punk, also adopt the hoodie, that the famous American skate magazine Thrasher, created at the beginning of the 80s, contributes to popularize with its covers. And since punk and Vivienne Westwood go hand in hand, the hoodie is logically found on the catwalks from its fall/winter 1982 collection.

In the 90s, the hoodie is everywhere, dresses academics, athletes, geeks, artists. Brands such as Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger are inspired by the street for their collections, but designers such as Raf Simons, in the early 2000s, will really make the hoodie a fashion piece, through oversized cuts that will be taken up by Vetements or even Gosha Rubchinskiy, a decade later.
